The main features and working principles of various engine types now used in heavy railway service are gone through, especially from the angle of the thermal cycle adopted: four-stroke or two-stroke. While admitting that in this field the engines in actual service are numerically in prevalence of the two-stroke type, it is pointed out that most of the makers are oriented towards the four-stroke. Admitting, on the other hand, that the two-stroke cycle may possess constructional possibilities already known, but not yet used in the railway field, some ideas are exposed and particulars are given concerning layouts of two-stroke engines designed according lines different from the ones more currently followed at present.
