This paper gives a review of dieselization program of the railroads in the United States. The influences of physical arrangement of steam locomotive repair shops on conversion to diesel locomotive repair shops are outlined. A comprehensive outline of typical maintenance procedures followed in the course of the overhaul of a locomotive after eight years of road service is described. Plans for improvements of techniques that will further emphasize the economies of diesel motive power are discussed.
