Als Ersatz für den traditionellen Kurbelbetrieb von Verbrennungsmotoren wird ein Kurbelmechanismus mit einem Exzenter vorgeschlagen. Dieser neue Kurbeltrieb wird ausführlich beschrieben, wobei bauliche, kinematische und geräuchseitige Vorteile herausgestellt werden. Als neue Elemente werden die exzentrische Pleuelstange, die exzentrische Axiallagerführung und der extrem kurze Kolben in einem Stück mit der Kolbenstange gesehen. Es wird ein konstruktiver Vergleich des neuen exzentrischen Triebwerks mit der traditonellen Triebwerksausführung am Beispiel eines langsamlaufenden 2-Taktmotors vorgenommen, wobei eine Reduzierung der Bauhöhe um ca. 3 m ausgewiesen werden konnte.

    The paper deals with a new crank mechanism with an eccentric suitable to substitute the traditional crank mechanism in various types of I.C. reciprocating engines. The principle of its function will be discussed and the benefits of the crank mechanism in respect of the ordinary mechanism will be illustrated. In the end the application to a 2 stroke slow naval engine in which there is a notable reduction in height is presented. Here an eccentric crank mechanism for I.C.E. is presented in a way that reduces notably the height of the engine with the same stroke of the piston with respect to the traditional solution. The use of such crank mechanism is particularly interesting in the naval field since the reduction in height is more consistent for long stroke engines. In fact taking into account that a naval engine can reach and overtake 12 m to 14 m in height, a reduction, also if percentually modest, allows us to lower by some meters the upper bridge of the engine room permitting in this way a considerable increase in useful space. The eccentric thrustblock guide is a further new element characteristic of the engine applications. The slight torsional give proposed for the fixed gear appears essential for the correct cooperation of the three elements which constitute the new mechanism. This latter, as it has been conceived, could perhaps substitute the ordinary crank mechanism, by now rooted for more than a century in engine practice, at least in some successful applications.
