The Ministry of Transport and Japan Foundation for Shipbuilding Advancement organized the Committee on Ship Reliability Investigation in 1981 and initiated full-fledged ship reliability investigation to grasp reliabilities of ship, shipboard equipments as a total system to a reasonable extent and to improve the efficiency in maintenance of shipboard equipments with assistances of shipping and shipbuilding industries. All investigated ships have the unattended machinery space, which are called 'MO ships' in Japan. The data stored and processed by a computer of the Ministry of Transport are analyzed on various items. Purpose of analysis were: Reliability evaluation on whole propulsion system; Evaluation method for reliability improvement and optimum maintenance; Comprehension of failure characteristics, environmental effect; Failure characteristics of component; Macroscopic analysis on maintenance.
