(Senst)
With engine designers and producers aiming at meeting the market requirements for their products, and with shipowners accumulating the actual operating experience, an intense interplay between these parties is both inspiring and mutually profitable. This paper will outline an interplay between engine designers and producers and shipowners which has been uniquely comprehensive, viz. the cooperation established among one of the world's largest and most esteemed liner operators, the A.P. Moeller Group, as the driving force; Holeby Diesel, MAN B&W Diesel's Genset technology division; and MAN B&W Diesel's two-stroke Application Department. The paper describes how ideas conceptualized by the operator have materialized within the framework of this cooperation. One of the milestones described is the conception and application of the ICS. User experience with this system, which is currently being installed in a series of container vessels, is also described. The service experience now at hand has led to the definition of a base load engine concept in Genset technology, which is practicable only when very long periods can be permitted between overhauls. The paper will also report on the user's experience from operating an auxiliary engine on one of the Company's vessels for 36000 running hours in the course of only 4 1/2 years. The systems engineering approach, which takes advantage of newly developed electricity producing equipment and turbo compound systems related to the main engine, can produce efficiencies beyond those obtainable by the individual unit in its own right. To lift the mental burden off the shoulders of an ever reduced crew, and to ensure continuity of supply together with maximum profitability of the entire plant, energy management systems have been developed, which continuously survey and distribute the load on individual units of the entire power plant. Concepts for further development will be presented and discussed.
