Umfassende Abwaermeverwertung (Waermebilanz), niedriger Kraftstoffverbrauch, reduzierte Lagerbelastung. (Senst)

The diesel engine's role in the propulsion of ships has become in the past decade fully predominant. The simplicity of the 2 stroke big bore engine as well as its low maintenance requirements and the low specific fuel consumption are reasons for this lasting attractiveness. To fit exactly to market needs, Sulzer has developed, the new RTA '2-Series', featuring lower shaft speeds for higher propulsion efficiency. Research and development methods used to design and predict the main engine parameters are described, using the two examples 'scavenging process analysis' (model tests and numerical analysis) and also 'Finite element analysis of crankshafts', outlining the potential of these methods. The new Sulzer RTA '2-Series' is designed to combine the advantage of having low shaft speeds with extreme compactness and at the same time low manufacturing costs. Design details applied are discussed. Overall economy in the RTA '2-series' is achieved by fine tuning measures on the combustion and scavenging side to optimise specific fuel consumption but also by application of the turbocompound principle, by means of main engine driven generators and by reduction of auxiliary power requirements. Reliability aspects of the engine are discussed in the last paragraph based on the examples of the exhaust valve, the engine bearings and the piston running behaviour.
