Zunehmende Verwendung von Schweroel machte die Schaffung einer Kennziffer erforderlich, die der Cetanzahl bei Dieselkraftstoffen entspricht und Zuendzahl ('Ignition Number') genannt wird. Beschrieben wird ihre Bestimmung im Britischen BP-Forschungszentrum in einem Pruefmotor und nach Laboruntersuchungen. Zusaetzlich wurde eine Gleichung entwickelt fuer die Zuendzahl als Funktion von Dichte, Viskositaet und Temperatur. Gute Uebereinstimmung mit der Pruefmotor- und der Labormethode.     The British and draft ISO Standard Specifications for Marine Fuels recognise a need to define the ignition quality of residual fuels but accepts that no reliable test method for measuring this parameter exists. A CFR cetane rating engine has been successfully modified at the BP Research Centre to accommodate residual fuels and a test method for measuring their ignition quality has been developed. Using this method an equation has been established which can be employed to predict the ignition quality of a residual fuel oil blend. The equation is based on density and viscosity, two parameters readily available to a marine engine operator. Further, using a series of test fuels of widely varying quality, measurements undertaken in the modified CFR engine have been successfully correlated with ignition performance in full scale, medium speed, marine diesel engines. Finally, a laboratory technique, utilising thermogravimetric analysis coupled with simultaneous differential thermal analysis has been applied to study the ignition behaviour of a wide range of residual fuels. The technique, which utilises small samples (25 mg), can differentiate clearly between fuels of differing ignition quality and a good correlation with the CFR engine test has been achieved.
