Pre-treatment of diesel fuel oil is necessary in order to prevent the clogging, erosion and corrosion of the fuel management system and high temperature corrosion of gas turbines used in offshore applications. Fuel treatment systems including (1) simple filters, (2) coalescer filters and, (3) centrifugal separators have been employed. Practical experience has shown that centrifugal separators are the most reliable and cost effective method of ensuring the high quality fuel demanded by the gas turbine. System cost must always be a serious consideration. In view of the security of operation which will result from a well designed system constructed from quality components, the consideration must be tempered with sound judgement and only those manufacturers having good references should be chosen as suppliers of such equipment. Any attempt to compromise quality in design or installation should be regarded seriously, especially in view of the remote and hostile environment in the North Sea.
