In den Laboratorien der Firma Nippon Oil Co. wurde ein neuer Tuepfeltest zur Einschaetzung der Stabilitaet der Schweroele entwickelt. Dabei wird von der aehnlichen ASTM-Vorschrift ausgegangen, nur der Anwendungsbereich wurde erweitert. Unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen kann man auch die gemischten Kraftstoffe auf Bestaendigkeit pruefen. Vergleich der labormaessigen und praktisch ermittelten Ergebnisse. Damit auch im breiteren Maßstab statistische Angaben von den Schiffen gesammelt werden koennen, wurden hierfuer entsprechende portable Apparaturen entwickelt und an Schiffen unterschiedlicher Gattungen zwecks Auswertung der dort angewandten Kraftstoffe untergebracht.     A developmental study was carried out on the stability evaluation methods that most closely predict actual performance. This paper describes the procedures and characteristics of a newly developed spot test, the correlation between laboratory performance tests and this newly developed spot test, and the application of this test to actual field performance. The newly developed spot test is based on the ASTM spot test and modified for wider applications. This spot test can be used to evaluate the stability of a residual fuel itself, check the compatibility of a residual fuel with another fuel or evaluate the fuel stability during storage. It has a fairly good correlation with the Shell hot filtration test, the laboratory oil purifier test and the filterability test. The stability of fuels during storage is remarkably influenced by a scale effect in laboratory tank storage tests. When residual oils and cutter stocks are blended to make marine fuels, the stability of fuels during storage can be guaranteed by selecting adequate combinations of residual oil and cutter stock properties. By eliminating air exposure on the surface of the fuel, sludge formation during storage can be prevented. The stability of marine fuels can be improved by mixing the fuels with propane precipitated asphalt, and some additives have an effect on improving fuel stability. A handy test kit to conduct the newly developed spot test on board was developed and a few ships have been equipped with the test kits for a trial period.
