The development of powerful laser devices provides a better basis for surface treatment of automobile parts than ever. In this paper, automotive piston pins and valve tappets made of 45 steel are hardened by CW CO2 laser with choiced technological parameters, then their microstructure, hardness distribution, wear resistance, deformation and service life are analysed and evaluated. The experimental results show that the hardened zone is composed of three layers: the hardened layer, the partially hardened layer, the transition layer. The hardened layer consists of fine martensites. The partially hardened layer consists of fine martensites and few bainites. The transition layer consists of martensites and a few carbide-free bainites and some undissociated ferrites. The hardened zone has better plastic deformation resistance and adhesive wear resistance properties. In addition, piston pins and valve tappets hardened by laser processing have the advantage of good hardening quality, less deformation and low reject, and their service life is four times longer than those hardened by routine methods.
