NITREG a state-of-the-art gaseous nitriding technology, based on constant monitoring and maintenance of the nitriding potential, has been tested out and selected for an increasing variety of applications in the automotive industry, meeting specification requirements where wear and corrosion resistance, as well as distortion and even surface roughness are of significance. This paper presents examples of applications, ranging from: components of car window opening mechanisms, where not only wear but corrosion resistance is required, to clutch hubs and rocker arms, made of carbon steel, to cast iron differential housings, to automotive valves made from austenitic stainless steel, hydraulic components of dump-truck lifting mechanisms and crankshafts. In all cases, the environmentally friendly gaseous atmosphere has replaced such technologies as salt-bath nitriding, chromium and zinc plating, or induction hardening, yielding good properties and substantial economic savings. Some of the applications are already being turned out on a mass production basis. Thanks to the harnessing of the nitriding potential as the process controlling factor, turnkey installations operating in the NITREG system assure predictable and reproducible results, taking guesswork out of nitriding.
