Reliability aspects of braking requirements applicable to vehicles are considered in this paper. Adaptation of braking standards and national or international regulations to the braking technology progress should be oriented towards better interpretation of modern technical sciences accomplishments in the braking rule-making procedures and the worldwide harmonization of braking requirements would benefit from that, as well. Large application of different electrical/electronic devices might enable 'braking by wire' of vehicles in the near future. Improvements in road safety are expected but new type of malfunctions of the braking system that will occur must be taken into consideration. The purpose of this paper is not to propose new rules but to indicate some specific items that have to be analyzed in more depth for the sake of further improvement of braking regulations with respect to reliability requirements innovation. The need to apply reliability - based approach to innovation of braking requirements is supported by analyzing braking process stochastic character, mission of the braking system, its reliability and failure modes.
