One distinguished feature of parts produced from glass fiber reinforced polyester sheet molding compound (SMC) is the fact that the material's performance properties are greatly influenced by the molding process. Therefore, to ensure that SMC parts are properly designed for a given application, it is important to understand this influence and to use data based on the way in which it affects properties such as static mechanical strength and fatigue strength. Such information was not available and DAF, a major user of SMC for truck parts, therefore joined forces with Owens-Corning to conduct a study which would produce the necessary data. In addition, it was decided to investigate non-destructive test methods that might be used for final part inspection and quality assurance purposes.
