This paper gives an account of tests which were carried out in the hydrodynamic tunnel of the University of Grenoble on a 3D oscillating hydrofoil. Visualizations of tip vortex cavitation, which are presented in this paper, point out a strong influence of the water nuclei content in the unsteady case. The investigation was focused on the influence of the oscillation frequency on tip vortex cavitation inception. Without nuclei injection, a strong delay in cavitation inception appears at very small oscillation frequencies. The delay is significantly reduced by nuclei seeding and increases much more gradually with the oscillation frequency. The results are interpreted assuming that the time required for the inception of cavitation in the tip vortex corresponds to the time necessary for a cavitation nucleus to be captured by the vortex core. A rough estimation of capture times with and without nuclei seeding is given.
