Propeller cavitation is known as one of the major sources of vibration and noise on ships. Therefore it is important to predict the occurrence of cavitation on propellers in an early design stage, especially for fast navy ships. Tip vortex cavitation nowadays is the first type of cavitation appearing on the propeller blades. This paper is a summary of recent research work on the inception speeds of this type of cavitation for different propeller designs for fast navy ships. Experimental studies on tip vortex cavitation inception were conducted for different propellers in different cavitation test facilities and in full scale. Tests were performed in HSVA's conventional cavitation tunnel where only the axial component of the wake field was simulated with wire screens and in HYKAT, HSVA's large Hydrodynamics- and Cavitation Tunnel where model propellers are investigated at high rotational speed behind the whole ship model. The propeller parameters changed during the investigations were the number of blades, the profile geometries, the skew angle, blade thickness and load distribution. The results in HYKAT brought considerable progress compared to the data of the smaller tunnel. The exponent m im McCormick's formula was fitted to the special test configurations of the modern navy propellers tested in a facility like HYKAT.
