Aeroservoelastic tailoring has been used in a variety of efforts. The goal of these efforts have been to change the static and dynamic behavior of wings and wing-like surfaces through a combination of aeroelastic tailoring and the design of a suitable control system. However, a comprehensive examination of aeroservoelastic tailoring for gust response has not been performed to the best of author's knowledge. This study begins to examine aeroelastic and aeroservoelastic tailoring for gust response. To do this, optimization techniques are used to examine the limits of closed-loop gust response performance for a typical section model. As previously shown, the goals of minimum gust response and large instability speed have opposite behavior with respect to several structural parameters. The goals of this study are to: minimize pitch and plunge RMS due to a gust over a range of airspeeds from 10 % of the instability speed to 90 % of the instability speed, maintain a certain open-loop instability speed, maintain a certain closed-loop instability speed. A multiobjective optimization routine will be applied to the problem to find the optimal combination of structural and control parameters.
