The use of 'Smart Materials' for spacecraft structures offers significant advantages for future missions. In order to realize these advantages in 'Smart Structures', the development must be performed as an 'integrated' design regarding the interaction between the passive structure, the sensors, the actuators and the control system. Hereby, the 'Smart Materials' with sensors and actuators form the basis of the work. Dornier has performed work on the system design as well as on the fields of sensor and actuator development, embedding techniques and performance testing. A new type of optical fibre sensor was developed and tested successfully. Piezo ceramic materials were investigated for their suitability as sensors and actuators. The embedding techniques into CFRP structures formed an important part of the activities. The work concentrated on spacecraft applications mainly for active vibration damping, shape control and noise attenuation. Besides theoretical studies the performance of active vibration damping has been demonstrated on different functional models.
