Based on the understanding that performance compatible with gasoline-powered vehicles is vital for the prevalence of electric vehicles, we have developed a two-seater MX-5EV intended for commuting and short distance routine business activities that may not be affected by its short driving range and other weaknesses. Equipped with a high-power AC(alternate current) motor and high-power and high-energy Ni-Cd batteries, the MX-5 EV has proved having an accelerating performance equivalent to that of gasoline-powered vehicles as a result of performance tests. Furthermore, it has been judged through practicability tests that the vehicle can be used without any problem with the driving performance for routine business activities, and problems yet to be solved have been identified for improved practicability.
