In the arrangement of ZEV drive systems, the direct coupling of the electrical motor to the wheel results in a significant reduction of the vehicle weight, as well as it allows an improvement of the propulsion system efficiency. For such low-speed high-torque applications the newly-conceived slotless axial-flux permanent magnet motors exhibit great advantages, since they can be designed for an extremely high torque-to-weight ratio, and the resulting machine compactness and lightness allow housing of the motor into the wheel rim. This paper deals with the development of an electrical scooter prototype, which has been designed for application in the urban mobility. The scooter propulsion drive uses an axial-flux PM motor which is coupled directly to the vehicle rear wheel and fed by means of an IGBT bi-directional power converter. The paper discusses the scooter drive configuration and reports experimental results taken from the axial-flux PM motor drive prototype.
