In the framework of a general assessment of fuel cell/battery hybrid vehicles, a computer model has been developed to be used as a tool for the system design of the power generator and the electric drive train. The model can predict the vehicle performance and the trend of the most important process variables during different typical missions, thus permitting to verify the design choices and to identify the critical items that need further improvements. A design study for an urban 12 m bus equipped with a fuel cell/battery hybrid system has been carried out. Different configurations of the power module and the drive train have been evaluated to define the specification of the main components. The most significant results obtained by simulating the reference design solution are reported.
