Series hybrid power trains permit a convenient range extension of battery electric vehicles, but must be carefully sized in order to keep curb weight reasonable limits. Namely battery capacity is tailored to the typical mission, as well as the generator rated power. While hybrid cars shall be provided with a fully automatic control of all-electric and hybrid modes, the repetitive service of buses allow for a less flexible schedule: nevertheless more freedom is left to energy and emission optimization. Tools for off-line calculation of energy consumption span from phenomenological vehicle simulation to lumped parameter formulae. Simulation is currently used on design, but is unsuitable for users because of cost and handling complexity. A lumped parameter method has therefore been developed, with the purpose of advising transport companies in choosing the best operative conditions, and possibly of enable them to take correct decisions. The power level of the generator, on-off switch points of the ICE, the schedule of the bus line must be adapted to a number of characteristic variables, likeaverage speed, road grade, actual number of passengers, etc. Theoretical fundamentals of the method are described in the paper, together with calibration criteria. Also the calculation procedure is outlined.
