With the increasing air pollution in conurbations there is a growing interest in electric vehicles. These are emission free at the point of use and there-fore offer a dramatic improvement in environmental conditions. Of course, it is also important to compare the electric vehicle with the established combustion engine vehicle at the global environmental level. This comparison takes account of all emissions, from primary energy mining through fuel preparation to final energy use. In this study the emissions for a 'European' electric vehicle are considered, using data for the generation of electricity in a group of European countries. The present change in energy sources for electricity production in Europe requires an update of the emissions related to electricity production from time to time. This study by the UNIPEDE Group of Experts on Electric Vehicles shows the comparison for the year 1992 and, as a forecast, for the year 1996. The main air pollutants and the 'greenhouse gas' carbon dioxide, resulting from the use of both electric and combustion engine vehicles, are considered. The comparison is based on urban traffic conditions and real emissions, not emission limits. The computed result shows that electric vehicles have a substantial environmental advantage in a common European sense now and in the future, not only at a local level but also at a global level.
