The aerospace industry has made rapid advances in technology in the last twenty years which have greatly increased the survivability of aircraft systems. One of the area that may significantly affect the vulnerability of the aircraft is the use of composite materials for structure and other components. Despite increased use, primarily for their strength and light weight, little is known about the ballistic damage effects and tolerance of such materials. Although the knowledge base is growing due to an emphasis on testing, there is still a tremendous disjoint between the test data and the practical application of that data in vulnerability assessments. This document attempts to provide the vulnerability analyst with some guidelines for the treatment of composite materials in performing an assessment. A summary of the vulnerability analysis process is provided, followed by a discussion of the various types of composite materials found in aircraft components, their properties, and damage effects to probable threats. A practical application of this data, the development of penetration equations and PK/H curves, is also presented.
