The feasibility of active and passive vibration control systems for suppressing the transfer of orbiter vibration energy to its payload during lift-off is studied. A five degree-of-freedom lump parameter model of a satellite is considered and the performances of active and passive vibration control systems are evaluated and compared. An active vibration absorber which can provide guaranteed closed-loop stability and control with collocated sensors and actuators is studied. For passive vibration isolation, modified designs for the orbiter trunnions to include the rubber bearing and resilient friction systems are considered. Effectiveness of different vibration control systems for protection of the Space Shuttle payload during lift-off are analyzed. The Space Transportation System mission 41 (STS-41) Z direction lift-off acceleration is used as dynamic input for the orbiter. Peak responses of the satellite with active and passive vibration control systems are compared with those in the absence of vibration control systems. The results show that properly designed passive and active vibration control systems are effective in reducing the lift-off vibration.
