The authors have developed a new method to optimize engine mounting system design for motor vehicle sub-frames. The method, based on three analyses, i.e., modal, sensitivity and structural modification, in the general viscous damping system, formulates the vibration level (or objective and constraint functions) by satisfying trade-off method, thereby allowing the sequential linear programming technique to compute optimization. In general, vehicle performance factors such as riding comfort, driving stability, and drivability are interrelated in a complicated and inherently contradictory manner. It is hoped, therefore, to develop methods to balance these in an early stage of design. The present paper describes a number of cases where the sole idle vibration, without eteriorating any aspect of vehicle performance, was improved by optimization in which the mount frequency dependence is considered, assuming that the vehicle body is an elastic structure. Design parameters used include the mount location, orientation angle, spring constant, and damping coefficient. This method was experimentally proven effective, and it was determined that the mount layout had a significant effect. Furthermore, it turned out that this method could substantially improve vehicle performance, reducing the frequencies of design, prototype preparation and verification tests.
