Driving operations such as steering, acceleration and braking are generally specified when conducting an experimental analysis of vehicle cornering properties. However, in real-world driving, drivers freely execute various corrective maneuvers, resulting in the formation of a driver-vehicle closed-loop system. To analyze vehicle cornering under this condition, we modified the phase plane representation method, a technique for simplifying complicated vehicle behavior. With this modified method, estimates were made of the tire slip angle in order to eliminate the effects of the closed-loop system. Experimental data were analyzed with this method and compared with the results of subjective evaluations of vehicle cornering.
