2091 Al-Li alloy recently has become an excellent new aero-space material with its perfect properties. The material has been rolled into sheet, but its formability is not known, especially the possibility of the spinning of components for use in the aero-space field is little known. Therefore, a preliminary exploration of the sheet spinning 2091 Al-Li has been undertaken. The plasticity of 2091 Al-Li alloy was very low at room temperature, but it was higher after solid solution treatment and much higher when hot spinning. The spinnability of the 2091 Al-Li sheet was increased progressively from that of the as-supplied state, by solid solution treatment and by hot spinning. The 2091 Al-Li alloy could not be spun at room temperature; it could be spun after solid solution treatment, but it was difficult to spin a deep cup; whilst hot spinning (or the claimed 'quasi-super plastic spinning') was successful, the key to its application being the determination and control of the heating temperature.
