Concept and significance of quality keep changing. In the past, quality was the result of the final inspection of the vehicle. Today, quality is defined as the customer's total satisfaction with the product. This change in the definition of quality and the methodical approach to quality and reliability assurance required today are the subject of this paper. Apart from product development, which plays a decisive role, time and costs are essential criteria. Special emphasis is placed on Simultaneous Engineering and its tools. Managing quality is the strategic challenge which the industry is facing today.
