As part of the contribution of Centro Ricerche FIAT (CRF) to the BRITE-EURAM Project-4436 'DIANA', a series of experimental tests have been performed on a current production passenger vehicle to study the sound-pressure or 'noise' arriving in the passenger compartment from the engine and powertrain via the different structural transfer paths. One of the principal objectives of CRF in this project has been to apply the traditional techniques of Transfer Path Analysis (TPA) to rank the importance of the various paths from the engine, and thus to determine which dominate. The aim of this paper is to describe in detail the tests which have been undertaken by CRF on the FIAT test vehicle, to discuss the results, and to draw general conclusions regarding experimental procedures and the effectiveness of the analysis techniques, with particular regard to the Complex Stiffness Method (CSM) implementation of TPA. Only a brief outline of the theoretical aspects is included because the TPA method is well known by automotive manufacturers, many of which have applied the techniques successfully for several years.
