The adaptive feedforward control strategy, which is widely used in active attenuation of engine related interior noise in passenger cars, has been proven to be very effective for stationary noise (corresponding to the situation in which engine speed is constant). Although it can be treated approximately as stationary noise during most time of driving, engine noise is most dominant during acceleration at which moment it is far from stationary. Thus, it is highly desirable that an active noise control system designed for stationary noise can also attenuate non-stationary noise to some extend. In this paper, the performance of LMS (Least Mean Square) adaptive algorithms for transient signals such as the engine noise during acceleration has been investigated through a series of experiments conducted on a 4-cylinder car.
