Noise cancellation inside vehicle cabins has recently been given considerable attention. Several studies have investigated active noise controllers using speakers to attenuate interior vehicle noise. Other studies have concentrated on modifying the transmission loss characteristics of the vehicle. This paper presents applications of smart materials to broad band vehicle noise cancellation. This concept would allow noise reduction inside the vehicle by using both the noise cancellation and transmission path modification techniques. Initial results of active noise cancellation of sound recorded in a vehicle during road tests are presented
