The production of structural fibre reinforced components requires a defined fibre orientation, high fiber content, adequate fibre impregnation and very often a sufficient surface quality. The geometrie of hollow components, which are produced with filament winding or prepreg lay-up using a solvable mandrel, is limited to a cylindrical typ of shape. Furthermore, these technologies are only capable for small series production. In order to produce complex shaped hollow components for medium series a production technology, which combines the bladder moulding technology with the Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM), has been developed. This technology has been used and demonstrated for a continuous fibre reinforced lightweight truck balancer. The fibre reinforcement is braided around a flexible tube e.g. out of silicon rubber. This reinforcement structure and the tube is subsequently laid into the cavity of the RTM mould. After closing the mould air pressure is applied to the inside of the tube and the fibre reinforcement is formed to the shape of the mould. In the following the matrix resin is injected into the cavity and crosslinked in the heated mould. A high laminate quality with a fibre volume fraction up to 50 % can be achieved.
