Composite components can exhibit structural characteristics that meet or exceed those of conventional materials at a significant savings in weight. Composite materials can also be formed into very complex shapes to satisfy difficult design criteria. These features have resulted in increasing use of these materials in both automotive and aerospace applications. Unfortunately, the reinforcements that make composite materials so attractive for efficient structures also make them heterogeneous and very difficult to inspect. Ultrasonic techniques can successfully inspect a wide variety of composite materials. However, thick composites are difficult to inspect with ordinary ultrasonic methods. The reinforcing fibers produce scattering of ultrasonic signals, causing signal amplitude to fall off rapidly with increasing frequency. Complex shapes further complicate the inspection problem because of the need to maintain orientation of the transducer normal to the component surface.
