Many of the new and alternative materials for the transportation industries today and in the future are composite materials. Because of the great variety of composites and their internal morphological complexity, different measurement techniques are needed to assess their structural integrity and material properties. In this paper some examples of industrial problems in composite problems and their nondestructive evaluation (NDE) solutions are described. Topics discussed include fiber orientation determination, detection of near-surface flaws in composite laminates, evaluation of as-fabricated resin transfer molded (RTM) parts, and characterization of graphite epoxy prepreg tapes. The NDE methods described in this work use mainly ultrasonic and eddy current techniques.
