Acoustic Emission has been a developing form of non-destructive testing. By definition, Acoustic Emissions are the elastic stress waves generated by the rapid release of energy in a material. In the seventies, it was primarily a laboratory tool used more for curiosity than science. In the eighties, acceptance began by regulatory agencies, technical societies and the technical community in general. Today, it is being utilized as an on-line QA tool in manufacturing; it is being applied in field applications to verify structural integrity for safety; and is used as an analytical tool in designing new products and materials. This paper describes some of the key issues in applying acoustic emission testing to composite materials. When utilizing acoustic emission testing, the signals generated are transient signals that last only as long as the energy release is occurring. Due to its' transient nature, the instrumentation records certain signal parameters (e.g. amplitude, duration, signal strength) and statistically analyzes it to determine the source mechanisms and criticality or severity. The nature of the signals, the time or stress at which they occur, and other background data is then used to establish control criteria and an accept/reject criteria.
