This paper presents an open and extendible approach for rapid prototyping which is used to demonstrate new functions in vehicle domains. Most of the designs incorporate electrical, mechanical and hydraulic elements. The comprehensive dynamic system is modelled including the interactions between the hydraulic and electrical as well as electronical components. System analysis is used to identify the behaviour, to extract key parameters and to indicate components that are operating near or above rated values. Based on this knowledge discrete and event driven control design can be earily done within the integrated engineering environment. This environment includes graphical computer aided control tools which automatically translate block-diagrams into real-time code. The prototyping techniques are applicable to a broad range of dynamic systems, especially those containing multiple technologies that must work together to accomplish the oerall design objectives. The method supports the concept of interdisciplinary design teams by providing enhanced communication among engineering specialists.
