Bevel gears are used inside axle gear-boxes of motor vehicles in order to change the transmission direction, -speed and -torque. After manufacturing bevel gears are often tested in noise emission and single flank work variation to assure the quality of the gear-sets. Nevertheless there are still complaints about the noise of some gear-sets. A high noise emission should be avoided in order to get a better product-acceptance and match technical specifications and laws, which would become important in the future. There are differences between the test results and the real running behaviour of the gear-set because the gear-tests are not carried out under real operating conditions like operating speed and load. For this reason a test bench has been developed at the WZL, which allows noise- and running-tests under real conditions. The investigations made on this test bench helped to estimate the noise and running behaviour of bevel gear-sets. From these tests more knowledge is achieved to improve the gear-behaviour and to reduce its noise emission.
