Supercars promise greatly reduced energy consumption and vehicle emissions. As supercars represent a radically different technology from present cars it is not easy to find the resources to actually develop them as innovation in the car world typically is rather conservative. Furthermore, supercars have to compete with other technologies that want to demonstrate their potential to reduce vehicle emissions and that are competing for the same scarce resources. The paper will analyze how, under these circumstances, support for the development of supercars could still be obtained and what type of government action could be sought that would stimulate their development.
