Natural convection around a horizontal, isothermal cylinder buried in a water-saturated porous medium is modeled using the Darcy flow model. The governing equations are solved numerically to obtain the flow field in the melt region, the temperature distribution, the size of the melt region, and the local and average Nusselt numbers around the cylinder as functions of the cylinder burial depth, H, the modified Rayleigh number, Ra, and the dimensionless phase-change temperature, Tp, and the thermal conductivity ratio. A bicylindrical grid was used that exactly models the complex geometry. The average Nusselt number along the cylinder increases with increasing burial depth, increasing thermal conductivity ratio, and decreasing phase-change temperature; all of which increase convection within the melt region. The heat transfer from the cylinder is minimized at some value of the burial depth that is a function of the Rayleigh number and the dimensionless phase-change temperature. For a given burial depth and phase-change temperature, the melt region size is minimized at small values of the Rayleigh number.
