The development of the metal supported automotive catalysts is of great interest, because of the greater geometrical surface and lower flow resistance which they offer with respect to traditional ceramic monolith. With such a type of substrate, in fact, high conversion efficiencies can be achieved together with a reduction of overall device volume and engine power losses. However technical problems connected with monolith durability and costs are still present so leading to intense research work on this topic. In the present study a simulation model of an automotive converter has been developed in order to compare the thermal behaviour of a metallic substrate, during warm-up period, with the analogous response of a ceramic one. Temperature history inside the different supports is analyzed so allowing to accurately compare the two different solutions.
