Plasma sprayed ceramic thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are used to protect gas turbine engine hot section from environmental degradation as well as to increase thermodynamic efficiency. Most TBC systems consist of an insulative ceramic adhering to an underlying oxidation-resistant metallic bond coating. Techspace Aero developed a new two-layer thermal barrier coating which exhibits outstanding specific properties. Indeed, different parameters such as powder properties (grain size and phase distribution, flow test and deposit efficiency) and coating properties (density, porosity, bond strength, roughenss, erosion resistance, oxidation/corrosion resistance and thermal cycling resistance) were studied in comparison with some other powders of well-known composition and gave completely satisfactory results. Moreover, military engine augmentor parts coated with the new TBC were flight tested, and confirmed the excellent behaviour of the coating.
