New systems and tools to support drilling, coring, sampling, and taking downhole measurement in the deep oceans have been developed by the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) and the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) in the USA. New rotary core barrels and advanced piston corer/extended core barrels, drillship equipment, and stress analysis software to solve the drillstring configuration problem has been described. Multipurpose bottom hole assemblies (BHA), drill-in casing, new reentry systems, and a special seefloor structure for a hard rock guidebase have been presented.
