In this paper some results of a thermofluidodynamic three-dimensional unstationary simulation of the flow within a cylinder of an high performance spark ignition engine are presented. The tool of this analysis is the software 'Turbokiva 1.0', created and developed by Cray Research; the numerical solution of the flow is based on an ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian and Eulerian) finite volumes method. The structured mesh has been created by means of the software I-DEAS, from SDRC. The cooperation with Ferrari Auto has permitted to carry out the study on a recent production engine, the Ferrari F116B, a twelve cylinder, 5.5 litres, 324 kW, V-engine mounted on the car 'Ferrari 456 GT'.
