This paper provides information on data collection efforts in two of the most significant heavy-duty demonstrations of alternative fuels in the world: the Federal Transit Administration's Alternative Fuels Initiative and the California Safe School Bus Clean Fuel Efficiency Program. These programs are in-use field demonstrations of methanol, ethanol, natural gas, and LPG engines in transit and school buses. In both cases data is being collected on fuel consumption, maintenance activities, and operations and maintenance costs. The paper describes the types of data which are being collected, the methods by which data are being collected, the types of analyses which are being performed, and the availability of the data to the general public. The paper also discusses the effectiveness of different data collection methods and how these methods have affected the completeness, reliability, and validity of the data sets which have been developed in each program. The paper provides information for future users of these data and analyses as to how to use results for drawing valid and meaningful conclusions about alternative fuel technologies. In addition, the lessons learned about in-use data collection in large demonstrations can guide future programs to the most useful and accurate data collection methods available.
