A simple model has been developed which predicts NOx emissions from spark-ignited, natural gas-fueled reciprocating internal combustion engines. The model was constructed using common relations for engine performance coupled with a simple rate equation-type NOx calculation. The model was designed to be used in conjunction with an automated data acquisition system that would measure relevant engine and ambient parameters. The model uses this information with a combination of theoretical and empirical relationships to calculate a modified fuel-air cycle for these conditions. The peak combustion temperature derived from this cycle is then used to correlate NOx emissions. The model has been developed for both four-stroke and two-stroke cycle engines. The results discussed in this paper are for the four-stroke version of the model. The calculated values have been compared to experimental data, and good agreement between the two was found.
