This paper discusses whether a hydrodynamic or a hydrostatic transmission should be used in the drivetrain of a wheel loader. Manufacturers have different opinions about which solution is the best. The hydrodynamic transmission is today the most common world wide. Both principles have advantages and disadvantages that have to be considered. The hydrodynamic transmission is a robust design with high reliability and the behavior of such a transmission is well known to most operators. For big wheel loaders the price of the components is still favourable. The hydrostatic transmission has other advantages like stepless speed control, precise control of tractive effort and speed, good performance when climbing obstacles and high efficiency (low fuel consumption).
