Today, small utility engine market is anxious for the engine being 'user friendly' which satisfies the requirements such as good fuel economy, excellent startability, elimination of vapor lock, misfiring and after bang. On the other hand, the regulation for exhaust emissions on small utility engines is being watched with keen interest. The State of California has determined two levels of exhaust emissions regulation which will be implemented in 1995 and 1999. The current approach for compliance to such regulation is to lean the fuel air mixture ratio. However, a simple carburetor applied to small utility engines will be a serious limitation on leaning A/F ratio. Now, newly developed FD620D provides a electronic fuel injection system. This engine is featured by low exhaust emissions, less fuel consumption, excellent startability at seasonal temperature extremes and elimination of the phenomenon associated with a lean mixture ratio. This system will also have higher possibility for coping with future exhaust emissions reduction though further study will be required. In this paper, we will present the overall specifications of the FD620D and the features of the fuel injection system used. We will include the various technical elements that were applied along with the results of studies made during design and development.
