The theoretical foundation of a numerical method, called Fourier-Kochin-Galerkin method, for calculating wave loads on a ship, or an offshore structure in a current, is presented. The method circumvents the major difficulties associated with the Green function for time-harmonic free-surface flows at forward speed by adopting Kochin's approach, which essentially consists in using a Fourier representation of the potential. The hull of the ship or structure is divided into curved patches, and a discontinuous Galerkin solution procedure is employed for determining the potential within the patches. The required integrations over the patches are performed by subdividing the patches into flat triangular panels.
