Standard driving tests developed originally for passenger cars are applied to two types of heavy commercial vehicles; a tractor-semitrailer and a truck-full trailer. The goal of the work described here is to investigate the applicability of these driving tests for this special class of articulated vehicles and to develop criteria which should serve as minimum requirements for a safe road-behaviour. In this paper the authors focus on a part of this work, being the rearward amplification and the tests to establish this parameter. One of the tests is the pseudo random steering input test; a driving test that is not commonly applied for this kind of vehicles. The pseudo random steer input tests gives a reasonable to good frequency response for the tractors. To determine the benefits of the frequency response of the towed vehicles and to develop minimum criteria further research and experiments with more truck combinations is needed. It is concluded that the rearward amplification is an important parameter, but only for the truck-full trailer combination and that it has to be restricted to values smaller than two to ensure a safe road behaviour; a value that has been reported by other researchers too.
