The present vehement discussion about the substitution of Diesel fuel by the so-called 'bio-Diesel' which is primarily based on rape oil has resulted in several research programmes. One of these programmes in which TÜV Bayern - the Technical Control Board of Bavaria - is involved includes the determination of exhaust emissions of passenger cars and tractors when operated with rape methyl ester and rape oil. Experience gathered so far has shown that Diesel fuel could be substituted by rape methyl esters without any problems as far as exhaust emissions are concerned and that there is a tendency towards higher emissions in the prechamber engine if pure rape oil is used. An engine modified by Elsbett company displays an improved emission behaviour when operated with rape oil.
